I was listening to the radio in my car today and heard a statement from Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as he talked about the contents of a just released scientific report. He stated an urgent need to “adapt and mitigate” risks. These words seem applicable to our struggles as information management professionals to address the transition to the digital world.
Records management professionals often feel like they are chasing a runaway train in their attempts to engage their peers and leaders in addressing records requirements in today’s complex and dynamic computing environments. I think an “adapt and mitigate” approach is the way to go --- first adapt to the demands and realities of our working environments by adjusting our own attitudes and behaviors and then focus our energies on mitigating the highest risks facing our organizations.
